The Art of Travel - Austin, TX
“Most of our pieces were acquired during or inspired by our travels. We were software executives: work took us around the U.S., and vacations and scuba diving allowed us to explore the world. We completed more than two hundred dives; in the Caribbean, Mexico, Central America, Fiji, Palau. Diving is the most incredible sport, it’s meditative and relaxing. You’re weightless and you’re taught to breathe slowly and deeply; floating while you watch the most incredible colors, shapes and creatures you’ve ever seen.
The mask collection started in Toronto, where I went on a business assignment in the late 1970’s. Every day on my walk to the subway I would pass an African art shop, and I fell in love with one of the pieces. From then on, if I saw a mask that really grabbed me I would buy it. The Maori mask in the sale is from museum store in New Zealand, which we visited for our our 35th wedding anniversary. We still remember how much we loved the Maori dancers.
Ours is really a two-generation collection, many of our pieces were inherited from Steve’s parents, who lived on an island in Puget Sound. We have Seattle to thank for our love of glass art and one of our favorites items in the sale— a clock by Robert Massa. —Jackie

Your collecting philosophy?
If you want it, buy it. Once, while in Montreal on business, we saw painting we both really liked, but it was very expensive and we didn’t buy it. We wished we had; it stayed on our minds. From then on, our philosophy became: if you have an emotional reaction to it, take it home.
Piece you’re most excited will have a second life:
A large fiber art wall hanging that we commissioned from Sally J. Bright. It hung on a two story wall in our living room and is shaped like the sea, it kind of looks like a shell. We’re thrilled to find it a new home.
The best-kept secret in Austin?
