Vintage Western Union Naval Observatory Time Wall Clock
Item Details
A vintage Western Union Naval Observatory Time clock from the Self Winding Clock Co. of New York. The clock has a round green painted case, cream face with black Arabic numerals, numeral band and arrowhead hands. The clock is marked to the center of the face and to the lower edge of the face. The back has an opening for batteries. The clock has a note of provenance to the inside of the back. The Self Winding Clock Company clock mechanisms were revolutionary for their time, because the spring that powers the clock was not wound by hand but with an electric motor. The Self Winding Clock Co. of New York was one of the first companies in the United States to successfully employ electric energy to power a clock. The winding motor is attached to, and mounted below, the conventional clock works. The unique feature of their patented clock mechanism is the automatic rewinding of the main spring each hour by the small electric motor.
