Antique "Our Mother of Perpetual Help" Tempera Icon
Item Details
An icon released in 1900, as a special commission to promote devotion to the Blessed Virgin under the title of ‘Mother of Perpetual Help’. Approximately 2300 were commissioned and are exact replicas of the original 16th Century Byzantine depiction, which is housed on the Church of St. Alphonsus in Rome. Legend has it that the original was painted by Saint Luke. In Eastern Orthodox tradition, this rendition is often identified with the ‘Hodegetria’ icon. Three artists were used to create these replicas using egg tempera on wood. The original seals and paperwork are still affixed to the verso. This was done under the Vicar General Father Matthias Raus and signed by Father Franz Xavier Reuss, under Pope Leo XIII. Please see links provided for more history on this icon.
