1865 "Morgan and His Captors"

Item Details

An 1865 hardcover copy of Morgan and His Captors by Rev. F. Senour, published by C.F. Vent & Co. of Cincinnati. It is a biography of Confederate general John Hunt Morgan, as well as a general history of the conflict between secessionist and unionist factions in the border state of Kentucky. Morgan is best known for Morgan’s Raid of 1863, in which he led a band of Confederate cavalry from Tennessee through Kentucky and Indiana and into Ohio, reaching as far as Salineville in northeastern Ohio before surrendering. Morgan’s Raid caused Union general Ambrose Burnside to declare martial law in Cincinnati briefly, and was sensational at the time, although ultimately a failure for the Southern war effort, except that it distracted Union troops and militia for a time. In addition to a biography of Morgan, this volume also contains biographies of the men who ultimately ended his raid, namely Brigadier Generals Hobson and Shackelford, Colonel R.T. Jacob, and Major G.W. Rue, the ultimate captor of Morgan. Published only two years after the Raid, this volume provides a fascinating insight into the Northern perspective on these events, as well as the larger context of the Civil War in Kentucky and the wider region.
