Item Details
An author-signed copy of the 25th anniversary edition of the novel ‘The Chosen’ by Chaim Potok (1929-2002), along with a 1946 first American edition of Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh.
Chaim Potok was an influential American Jewish author and rabbi, and is most famous for this, his first book, and for his 1972 bildungsroman, My Name is Asher Lev. Raised in an orthodox Jewish household, Potok was inspired to become a writer at the age of seventeen after reading Brideshead Revisited by the Catholic novelist Evelyn Waugh and realizing that fiction could be used to ‘create worlds out of words on paper.’ In spite of his parents disapproval, Potok spent many hours at a public library over the ensuing five years surreptitiously reading Dostoyevsky, Joyce, Hemingway, and other secular authors, and these became formative influences for Potok when he embarked upon his own literary career with The Chosen, which was the first book by a major publisher in the United States to portray orthodox Judaism. Potok has signed the book on the flyleaf. It is bound in black cloth and comes in its original red slipcase. Brideshead Revisited is bound in cloth and with its dust jacket.
Condition
- The slipcase has a tear in the middle of one corner.
