Harriett Matthews Steel Sculpture, ‘After Europe’ 1971. The piece is placed on a white laminate rectangular pedestal. The sculpture was part of a one person show in 1974 at Vanderbilt University’s Old Gym Art Gallery. This steel structure was her first work executed after her 1971 European sabbatical. She received her BFA and MFA from the University of Georgia where she studied with the Sculptor Leonard deLonga and Byzantinist Historian, Ljubica Popovich. She taught at the University of Oklahoma for year, worked at the University of Massachusetts music library and ultimately landed in Waterville Maine at Colby College where she started the sculpture program. She still teaches there today.
