Circa 1861, E.C. Middleton’s chromolithographed portrait of George Washington on canvas that has been nailed onto an oval wood frame, artwork taken from a painting by Gilbert Stuart. This finely-rendered portrait of George Washington became an early icon in the world of chromolithography. Both the back and the front along the bottom read, ‘Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1861, by E.C. Middleton, In the Clerk’s Office of the District Court for the Southern District of Ohio’. The back also includes the words ‘Warranted Oil Colors’. Elijah C.
