An original oil painting on canvas by Thomas Corwin Lindsay (Ohio, 1839-1907). The stunning painting depicts a forest. Its focus point is a large tree to the center that still has greenery but among mostly bare trees; unsigned. Housed in a carved wooden frame. Stamped to the back ‘From the estate of Thomas J. Lindsay, a direct descendant of Thomas Corwin Lindsay b. 1859 d. 1907’. Thomas Corwin Lindsay was born and raised in Cincinnati, OH, in 1839. He is widely recognized as a landscape and animal painter, although he was also known to have done portraits. In his later years, Thomas was known for his tranquil scenes of farmsteads and livestock. In the autumn of 1858, he left for a sketching trip to Eastern Pennsylvania and upon his return in 1859, Thomas opened a studio on West Fourth Street in Cincinnati, OH. In the 1860s, he studied in Dusseldorf and Paris, returning to Cincinnati in the summer of 1868. Thomas was an early member of the Cincinnati Art Club and the Society of Western Artists. He exhibited at the 1859 Ohio Mechanics’ Institute annual, Cincinnati Industrial Exposition (1870-1883), Pogue’s (1875), and the Art Institute of Chicago (1896). There is a collection of his paintings in the Cincinnati Art Museum.
