The Original Collectors Series: Bob, Denver, CO
“Cars are in my blood. My grandfather was a mechanic for Chrysler in the 30’s and 40’s, and it just trickled down to me; I’ve loved them for as long as I remember. My collection started with toy cars and as I got older, expanded to bigger ones."
When my aunt would give us change to buy candy, I decided that the candy went too fast and cars were there to stay, so I started collecting diecast models. I found many of them through the Danbury and Franklin Mints. Every time either company would send me a flyer I’d go through it and pick and choose.
I displayed all of my cars in five large glass cases in my house, and I loved seeing them when I’d walk downstairs. It’s a collection with old cars, little cars, and a few newer cars mixed in. They eventually became too numerous for the cases and I ran out of room! I would say there were maybe 500 cars in total, if not more. I was an avid collector, believe me.” – Bob

Favorite item in the collection?
I’ve always been fond of the Chrysler New Yorkers, which is why I have two of them. It’s probably from the days when my grandfather would bring them home from work. I’ve always liked bigger cars. Nowadays it seems like all of the cars look the same, but I think in the ‘30’s and ‘40’s, the Chryslers almost looked like turtles, you know, with the big hoods. That really caught my eye. They had a push button drive for the transmission, which was unusual in that days. It was a beautiful car.
Who did you share this collection with?
My nieces and nephews enjoyed it, they would always come down and see the cars. They didn’t get to play with them, of course, though they certainly tried!
Which cars are you holding onto?
Besides the two Chryslers that I’m selling, I’ve got a ‘77 Malibu and a ‘76 Ford pickup in my garage. I put the pickup in a contest and won first place! The big ones are hard to let go of, I’ll tell you.
Other standouts in the collection?
The Limited Edition Stars and Stripes Corvette Stingray. I’m not an avid Corvette person, but I’m a patriot and I loved that color scheme, so I knew that I had to have the car. There’s also the James Bond Aston Martin model by The Danbury Mint. I’ve always loved the movies and get excited whenever a new James Bond comes out – especially the one featuring the Aston Martin. That was a special car, it really was.
