Shirley A. Mason’s life was brought to attention in the 1973 national best selling book “Sybil”, by Flora Schreiber in collaboration with Dr. Cornelia Wilbur. Shirley’s amazing story of childhood abuse and split-personality disorder were later portrayed in Sally Field’s Emmy-winning performance in a made-for-tv movie under the same name. Sixteen personalities were identified by Dr. Wilbur in eleven years working with Shirley.
After Shirley’s death in 1998, 103 paintings were located locked away in a closet in the basement of her home. The paintings span the years of 1943 to 1965, beginning 11 years before her psychotherapy and ending the year of her successful integration. Many paintings are unsigned and include examples of artwork presumably created by Shirley’s alternate selves.
The paintings, which have been collected and researched for by Jim Ballard, Sr, of Lexington, KY, will be available at auction for the first time on EBTH.com. Get a glimpse of “Sybil’s” life through this collection of Ms. Mason’s art at Luxe Art Gallery, 193 Kentucky Ave., Lexington, KY 40502, or online at EBTH.com.
