In the realm of collectibles, few names resonate as profoundly as that of Gail Funk, who emerged as one of the utmost authorities on marbles. As a testament to her expertise, Gail’s marble collection is being featured on “Filthy Fortunes” hosted by Matt Paxton airing on the Discovery Channel Sunday, March 9th. Gail’s journey began in 1963, sparked by the simple yet profound gift of a marble from her father. His story of this “found” marble that landed him in a bit of trouble with his mother was the initial spark igniting a lifelong passion that would see her become a beacon of knowledge and expertise in the world of marbles. Her entrepreneurial spirit and insatiable desire for knowledge propelled her forward, transforming a childhood fascination into a celebrated career. She contributed to several publications on marbles and stood out as a leading expert on cat’s eye marbles specifically. Known for her charismatic presence, Gail had an uncanny ability to connect with people from all walks of life, forging friendships wherever she went. She traveled extensively to trade and collect marbles and other collectibles, each journey adding to her vast trove of knowledge and cherished items.
Gails’ interests were not confined to marbles alone; she also amassed impressive collections of fountain pens, teapots, salt and pepper shakers and neon signs from the restaurant the family owned and operated called "Funkers” in Belmont, NY. There was also the campground named “Mother’s Pickin’ Chickin” that featured Blue Grass and barbeque, beloved and enjoyed by many. Gail could also be found playing the banjo (she was self taught) with the band “Reunion” in the 1980’s.
Gail’s family may not have participated as fully in her collecting endeavors however she enjoyed unwavering support at home, allowing her to fully immerse herself in her passions. They are immensely proud of her legacy as a preeminent marble authority and her spirit which continues to inspire collectors and enthusiasts around the world.
