The Collection of Kenneth & Barbara Hammel
EBTH is delighted to present the collection of Kenneth and Barbara Hammel of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Ken’s lifelong love of collecting began in 1974 when he purchased his very first original artwork, a landscape etching, while a student at the School of Architecture at UVA. While studying architectural history, Ken fell in love with the Art Nouveau and Craftsman aesthetics. This preference is strongly reflected in their collection which was lovingly assembled by Ken and his wife, Barbara, over the years of their marriage.
Ken’s long career as an architect informed his collecting sensibilities and allowed the couple flexibility to attend auctions to carefully build their collection. Ken and Barb also served as art patrons in the Lancaster area. They often attended functions for local artists, purchasing work directly from their studios, at benefit auctions and through private sales.
Ken and Barb always discussed new acquisitions together, so while the collection was built over many years it displays remarkable continuity and a cohesive vision dedicated to the beauty of modern design from the late 19th to the 21st centuries. Highlights in the collection include artwork by Roy Licthenstein and Pennsylvania artists David Brumbach and Jerome Hershey; studio glass by Louis Comfort Tiffany, Quezal, Loetz, and others; studio pottery by Rookwood, Roycroft, Van Briggle and more. An exceptional array of Art Nouveau jewelry and decorative arts compliment the sale.
