EBTH is pleased to present the collection of renowned Lexington, KY equestrian and “outdoor sports adventuress” Virginia Kraft Payson. A trail blazer in every sense of the word, Virginia was a journalist on the staff of Sports Illustrated for 26 years. She traveled to many exotic locales experiencing her craft first hand; hunting, shooting and fishing. Her dossier would include piloting a hot air balloon, hunting wild boar in Spain with Francisco Franco, tracking tiger with the Queen of Nepal and riding horseback with King Hussein of Jordan. Perhaps her crowning achievement was being the first woman to compete in and complete the 75 mile Iditarod dog sled race in Alaska. She finished 16 out of 22 drivers.
Virginia met and married Charles Shipman Payson in 1977, the couple shared a love for all things equestrian and became involved in the thoroughbred industry. After founding a 300 acre stud farm in Lexington, KY, Virginia became one of the industries most respected breeders with many of her horses winning prestigious races and awards.
Enjoy perusing the sale, a worldly collection befitting an iconic woman.
