Proprietor Richard Gervais may be described as a Renaissance gentleman with a strong wanderlust, specifically enamored with South East Asian countries. This becomes most evident when visiting his San Francisco “souk” (marketplace) which evokes the feeling of being transported to an exotic locale filled to the rafters with antiquities, ethnic treasures and garden sculpture.
Where to begin? While visiting Zamboanga City in the Philippines with a dear friend in the late 1960s, Gervais became captivated with the acquisition of a beautifully crafted antique brass betel nut container from the island of Mindanao. He was reported to claim “anyone with half a brain” would relish the idea of collecting such treasures and import them to the states. This epiphany led to over 50 plus years of traveling, all the while his keen eye collecting to represent antiquities from a plethora of cultures: Philippines, India, Bali, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos, Macau, Africa, Brazil and Japan to name most.
As Mr. Gervais entertains the notion of easing into retirement; a large portion of his collection is presented by Everything But The House in several sales. Perusing this sale offers the opportunity to acquire ancient earthenware vessels, a Tibetan thangka, polychrome carvings, Ming Dynasty porcelains, a Thai bronze Buddha, a large-scale Shiva Lingam, a Yoruba mask and so much more. All objects of vertu from vibrant cultures both past and present.
