As the daughter of immigrant parents, Madame Beatrice Alexander Behrman founded the Madame Alexander doll company in 1923. After spending time in her stepfather’s doll hospital where porcelain dolls were in constant repair, Madame Alexander set out to create dolls that were well crafted yet meant to be played with and loved. She was a pioneering businesswomen who defied expectations by combining her love for literary characters and notable people with creating dolls that bring out the creative instinct in children.
In the 1930’s Madame Alexander popularized the “sleep eyes” innovation and launched the first dolls that were licensed to represent entertainment properties such as Gone with the Wind and the ever popular Little Women. In 1942 she introduced “Jeannie”, one of the first walking dolls and in 1955 “Cissy” debuted as the first fashion doll in America.
Nearly 100 years later, Madame Alexander dolls invoke a sense of nostalgia while remaining true to the founder’s vision to create beautiful dolls that encourage creativity and play for both children and collectors.
