EBTH is pleased to present a collection from the enigmatic couple, Elizabeth and Dan Simpson. Elizabeth “Libby” Downer Simpson was the first female member of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, France’s “Knights of the Wine Roundtable,” in the early 1980s. She co-managed Paris’s renowned Académie du Vin with the late, great connoisseur Stephen Spurrier. Gaining a hot air balloon pilot’s license, she joined the Bombard Society, a unique, deluxe balloon touring outfit in France where she took exclusive tourists on wine tasting tours of Burgundy between balloon rides.
In Paris, Libby met Dan Simpson and, upon their 1990 marriage, moved with him to his first US ambassadorial post in Bangui, Central African Republic. Mr. Simpson studied English literature at Yale University and African Studies at Northwestern University. Many colorful years and exotic diplomatic posts later, the couple moved to downtown Pittsburgh where Dan became Foreign Editor at the Pittsburgh Post Gazette and Libby took on the role of wine and food writer while also teaching wine tasting at local higher education establishments. She is also a great supporter of the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony. With too many treasures to mention, enjoy perusing the eclectic collection from this robust couple!
