EBTH proudly represents this lifelong curated collection from the acquisitions of H.C. Brillhart and his wife Lena Mae. H.C.’s passion is crystal clear. He started collecting cut glass in the 1980s beginning with some inherited family pieces then his spectacular collection grew over the years culminating to include many rare patterns and pieces. He joined the American Cut Glass Association (ACGA) in 1985, was active in many capacities over the years and received the well deserved President’s Award in 2011.
H.C.’s family settled in Perrytown, Texas in the 1890s located in the far north panhandle close to the Oklahoma border. Herbert Claire Brillhart (known to everyone as H.C.) was born in 1924 and would remain in the area his entire life. He often told the story of meeting his future wife Lena Mae on the school bus when they were eight years old, a love story that lasted 67 years. Lena Mae was an accomplished artist in her own right, her extensive art collection providing a nice compliment to the brilliant cut glass. The couple enjoyed dazzling guests in their magnificent home, the cut glass being displayed in custom cabinets throughout with an extensive reference library on hand. It was well known that you were in trouble if you had the courage to bid against H.C. at the various auction houses yet despite his zest for collecting, he was also a generous donor to several museums. Little known is that H. C. was instrumental in locating and working to acquire the monumental ladle that was ultimately reunited with the magnificent Libbey 24” two-part punch bowl that is housed in the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio.
