From the Enger-Southwick Mansion in North Avondale, EBTH is proud to present an exceptional estate of rare books, fine oil paintings, sculpture, Southwest art, and antique furnishings. Having shared a life-long passion for American Western lore and Native American culture, the Southwick’s have included in this sale a Hollis Williford bronze sculpture, and oil paintings, drawings, and works by noted Southwest artists John Nieto, Phil Beck, David Phillips, and Virginia Lowden. Also included are fine Eastlake furnishings, antique rifles, a large collection of depression glass, cast iron toys and railroad antiques; most notably a 19th century station masters desk with hutch.
As an avid student of American history, Mr. Southwick developed a fine library of rare and antiquarian books, many of them limited editions offered through the eminent publisher Arthur H. Clark, including the much sought-after series "The Hidden Springs of Custeriana.” Other items of note are numerous ‘original source’ records reprinted verbatim in volumes issued on behalf of organizations including the Hakluyt, Champlain, and Quivira Societies; along with works by Elliott Coues, LeRoy Hafner, and Clifford Drury. Rare works such as the complete, definitive edition of “The Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition” edited by Gary E. Moulton and published by the University of Nebraska, as well as a set of Carl I. Wheat’s “Mapping the Transmissippi West 1540-1861” should pique the interest of any serious scholar or armchair explorer into the rich past of the vast spaces that make up the western reaches of our continent.
Housed in a 15,000 square foot mansion, this expansive estate collection will be presented in three consecutive sales; we welcome you join us for a preview of the first sale this Saturday, June 20th, from 10 am to 1 pm, at 992 Marion Avenue, Cincinnati OH 45229.
