Francisco Sainz fought in the Spanish Civil War as a teenager and began his studies in painting while living in Barcelona. He moved to New York after World War II to continue pursuing his artistic endeavors, and befriended many New York School painters, including Willem de Kooning, Lester Johnson and Alfred Leslie. His artistic style developed during the 1950s, which exhibited raw, unpolished flamboyance of the Abstract Expressionist movement, but was ultimately steeped in traditional portraiture and Spanish Folk art.
