EBTH is honored to present the estate of local living legend Harry A. Williams, housed in a celebrated John Edward Lautner (1911-1994) Mid Century Modern home, nestled in the hills of Hollywood, California right under the Hollywood Sign. The Harry A. Williams residence was built in 1952 and designed by Lautner, especially for Williams. Mr. Williams describes his home as “open and bright … with beam ceilings and 12 foot tall windows.” Harry and his family also worked with Lautner to design and establish the Beachwood Market, located in the Hollywood Hills, just down the hill from the estate. Harry and Mr. Lautner remained good friends throughout the years, with many memories to share.
The estate features a unique array of intriguing and beautiful items handcrafted by Mr. Williams, including precise and artistic renderings and sculptures in wood, whimsies and kinetic sculptures. Mr. Williams, a talented woodworker now in his late 90s, proudly told EBTH that he favors the pine sculpture of a trench coat and a pair of work gloves, as well as the Kinetic “Player Piano” sculpture. Celebrate this estate with EBTH, the contents of which arose from the mid-century structure they called home.
“The purpose of Architecture is to improve human life. Create timeless, free, joyous spaces for all activities in life. The infinite variety of these spaces can be as varied as life itself and they must be as sensible as nature in deriving from a main idea and flowering into a beautiful entity.” – John Lautner
