EBTH Showroom, Collection of David Torbet Johnson

EBTH is supremely honored to present the fine and diverse collections of the estate of David Torbet Johnson (1961-2013). Johnson, a well-known figure in the Cincinnati visual arts community, began his professional career after earning a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Univeristy of Illinois, then on to become the deputy director and curator for the Taft Museum of Art for 11 years (1985-1996). After, he served as the Director of Collections and Chief Curator of the Hillwood Museum, Washington, D.C.(2003-2006), also as the interim President of the Art Academy of Cincinnati (2009-2011), and lastly the gallery sales representative for the Phyllis Weston Gallery. A scholar of renown, published author and a prominent figure in the world of high culture, his collections were as diverse as his interests, encompassing antique porcelain and objets d’art, to a vast collection of Mid Century Modern ceramics, including an astounding amount of ceramics by Russel Wright, Eva Zeisel and Raymor. His collection of artwork, likewise varied, includes fine works in an array of media by local artists, outsider and folk artists, many pieces by Art Academy of Cincinnati students and faculty, and many local and notable figures such as Michael Scott, Paul Ashbrook, Sandy Rosen, Stephen Pentak, Brad Smith, D. Anthony Mahone, Jim Rottmeyer, Suzanne Fisher, Stephanie Cooper, Michael Scheurer, Brent Riley, Heather Gustus, Jay Bolotin and many others. Further highlights of the sale include Arts and Crafts furniture, an Isamu Noguchi Akari floor lamp, an immense and broad-reaching collection of books, related to fine arts collecting and research, African masks, Chinese porcelains, French porcelains, Pallisy – style majolica, and much, much more.
