Everything But The House is pleased to present the sale of Gene Rheude, award winning, life-long artist, University of Cincinnati DAAP graduate and avid antique collector. Here you will find original artworks and prints by several artists, including a drawing by one of Gene’s professors, Robert Fabe. Also sterling silver, a beautiful antique stained glass hanging lamp, 1959 Rookwood angel bookends, antique furniture and clocks, as well as fun and nostalgic toys, slot machines and comic books.
Gene apprenticed at the Frank Hulefeld advertising studio, then continued into a career as a design illustrator and wildlife artist. He was represented by the Harriet Crane Art Gallery where his work was displayed and sold. At that point in time he was noted for his controlled watercolors depicting vintage style art of women. Several examples can be seen in this sale.
Gene’s wildlife paintings exhibited extreme detail, displaying his control of watercolor in the animal’s feathers and fur. One of his favorite places to display his work was the Cincinnati Zoo Art Festival. Gene took first place with a watercolor titled “Raccoon” that still hangs in the Zoo’s office. He also won first place for “Soaring Eagle”, which has yet to go into print. Another noted accomplishment was his limited edition series of four Cincinnati scenes of Fountain Square, The Suspension Bridge, and Oregon Street in Mt. Adams.
