EVERYTHING BUT THE HOUSE is thrilled to be representing the sale of Cathryn and Carl Hilker, world travelers and conservationists who have played a pivotal role in saving the wild cheetah from extinction. Cathryn traveled to Tanzania, Africa after receiving her degree in anthropology from the University of Cincinnati to work with renown anthropologist Louis Leakey and there her passion for the magnificent cheetah was born. In 1980, the Cat Ambassador Program at the Cincinnati Zoo was established and Cathryn hand-raised her first cheetah named Angel. Cathryn and Angel traveled extensively promoting awareness concerning the cheetah’s dire situation and in 1992 the Angel Foundation was established to raise money toward conservation efforts. The foundation now includes a 17,000 acre cheetah preserve in Namibia, Africa
While Carl also shared Cathryn’s love of big cats, he was also an avid aviator, hot air ballooner, pyrotechnic, scuba diver, hang glider, parachutist, outdoor enthusiast, marathon runner, professional ski instructor, ski patroller, and cannoneer. In other words “The most interesting man in the world”.
Please enjoy perusing this sale filled with eclectic items, fine art, African artifacts, gold and silver coins, WWII articles and more, giving just a glimpse into this interesting chapter of the Hilker’s adventures.
