H. Gerstner & Sons Personalized Oak Machinist Tool Box with Tools, circa 1930s

A circa 1930s H. Gerstner & Sons oak machinist tool box filled with a variety of tools and personalized with a nameplate to the front. The personalization reads ‘Jas. R. Walter, Alex, Va.’ and is thought to be for James Walter, a machinist listed in 1920s-1930s census in Alexandria, Virginia. The piece features green felt interior lining to all the drawers with a lift-up compartment to the top and eleven drawers. The top latch is marked ‘H. Gerstner & Sons’ and the remnants of a paper label are affixed to the front of the bottom drawer. Each drawer is filled with various tools, including many precise measuring tools for use in machining. Some highlights include a 1915 L.S. Starrett no. 246 planer and shaper gauge; Williams forged wrenches; Consolidated Tool Works calipers; a Brown & Sharpe No. 4 machinist micrometer caliper, and much more.

- oxidation with rust and pitting to metal; chips and scratches to the wood; white residue on front of box; front panel has a loose wood piece; worn interior felt; missing one drawer pull; no key is present; oxidation, scuffs and scratches to most of the tools, some sets included but not checked for completeness; some tools have been personalized.
