A French model 1871 Chassepot bayonet with metal scabbard. This 19th- century bayonet was manufactured in France from 1866 to 1874 in association with the Chassepot rifle, a famous breechloading military rifle used by the French forces in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/1871. This battle weapon presents a brass grip with a latching arrangement, steel crossguard, with a fullered single-edged steel blade. With accompanying scabbard, the top of the bayonet’s blade is inscribed ‘St. Etienne 9bre 1871’.
