Oil painting on board

Sample was best known for his New England landscapes. The artist studied architecture at Dartmouth College. Later, he formally studied art in Los Angeles where he was inspired by artists Stanton MacDonald-Wright (American, 1890 – 1973), Jonas Lie (Norwegian-born American, 1880 – 1940), and David Alfaro Siqueiros (Mexican, 1896 – 1974). The artist taught painting at the University of Southern California, summering with his wife’s family in Vermont. These New England excursions would lead to Sample’s best known works. The artist’s mature style is marked with triangular compositions, a conservative use of color, and upbeat scenes with a touch of irony. Today, Sample’s works can be found in numerous private and public collections, notably including the Smithsonian Museum of American Art.
