Item Details

A circa 1880 Wm. Knabe & Company grand piano in a rosewood and walnut veneer casing with ornate molded and carved detailing throughout. This piece features a reticulated music rack with vining and scrollwork designs and molded arabesque detailing to the sides of the piano. It rests on three legs finished on scroll feet with matching molded arabesque details to the shoulders. The pair of foot pedals rest in a carved harp style support below the center of the full keyboard. The piano is marked with a maker’s mark and ‘Wm. Knabe & Co.’ to the fall board and marked with a black stencil to the interior ‘Wm. Knabe & Co. Gold Medal Pianos Baltimore, MD’ and also with the serial number 23266, which indicates the date of manufacture to be between 1880 and 1885.

William Knabe, emigrating from Germany, began working in the 1830s for a piano maker Henry Hartge, and in 1837, started his own piano selling and repair company. He later partnered with Henry Gaehle for the purpose of manufacturing pianos. In 1855, after Gaehle’s death, Knabe purchased the rights to all of their designs and formed Wm. Knabe & Company, which manufactured pianos until 1908, when the company was purchased and incorporated. Please see the included link for more information about the history of Knabe pianos.
