Vintage 1970's Mid-Western Soap Box Derby Racer, "Lynn"

A vintage 1970’s soap box racer titled ‘Lynn’ (presumably the name of the racer, girls were permitted to race in 1971) with original decals and official ‘Soap Box Derby’ rubber tires. The torpedo shaped racer numbered 58 is of wood construction with solid struts and cable steering. Decals to the red painted finish include ‘True Value Hardware’, ‘Loctite’, ‘NDR Family Member’ and a handmade label from the ‘Midwestern Invitational Gravity Drags’. The original red helmet is included.

Historically, Soap Box racing was started by Dayton, Ohio newsman Myron Scott after seeing a group of boys racing homemade cars in 1933. Chevrolet was the first official sponsor of the ’All-American Soap Box Derby in 1934 and the race ran continuously in Akron, Ohio until the onset of WWII. The races were open to boys only until 1971 when girls were permitted to race.
