A monotype on Arches paper titled SAT by Abstract Expressionist John Hoyland (British, 1934-2011), created in 1988. This work features an abstract design of irregular serpent-like shapes rendered in loose gestural strokes and various vibrant colors. Unsigned, the work is presented under glass and housed in a silver-tone metal frame.

Born in England, painter and printmaker John Hoyland studied at Sheffield College of Art and the London Royal Academy Schools. In the 50’s and 60’s, he traveled throughout France and Italy, and taught at Croydon College of Art and Chelsea School of Art, initiating the beginning of his teaching career. The artist frequently traveled to the United States, and immersed himself into the New York art world, establishing friendships with renowned critic Clement Greenberg and Abstract Expressionists Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, Helen Frankenthaler, Hans Hoffmann, Kenneth Noland, Jules Olitski, Robert Motherwell, and Larry Poons, among others. In 1999, Hoyland was appointed Professor of Painting at Royal Academy Schools, and a retrospective of his work was exhibited at the Royal Academy the same year. In addition, his work has been exhibited at numerous institutions including Tate Liverpool, the Serpentine Gallery, Whitechapel Art Gallery, and the Yale Center for British Art, to name a few.
