A WWI era graphite and watercolor sketch on newsprint by well-listed American artist and illustrator James Montgomery Flagg (1877 – 1960), titled Alert!. The sketch depicts a loose rendering of Uncle Sam looking through a set of binoculars into the distance; an eagle and a sign that reads ‘Alert!’ in bold red letters are positioned below him. The painting is signed in graphite to the lower left and initialed to the lower right.
James Montgomery Flagg was an established fine artist and illustrator, having studied extensively in New York, England and Paris. He is perhaps best known for his illustration featured on the American World War II “Uncle Sam” propaganda poster I WANT YOU for U.S. ARMY.

- creases and light wear throughout watercolor from a previous folded storage. Light, even toning across sheet. Light wear to frame.
