To the verso, the title ‘Kathy’ is inscribed. The piece is presented in a carved wood and gesso frame with a gilt finish.
A prominent Modernist figure of American painting, Walt Kuhn was born in Brooklyn, New York and acquired his artistic training at the Academy Colarossi, Paris and the Kunst Academie, Munich. Upon graduating, Kuhn further pursued his artistic career and moved to Holland, Italy and Spain, refining his technique while continuing his education. He was heavily influenced by Post-Impressionists, notably by Paul Cézanne. Kuhn was especially known for his figural compositions that often depict clowns and circus subjects. He is primarily known as the leading organizer of New York’s 1913 Armory Show, which introduced the American public to European Modernism. However, he maintained himself removed from European art movements. Walt Kuhn ouvre has been collected by many prestigious institutions including the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, the Dublin Museum, the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago and the Los Angeles County Museum, among others.
