Norman Wilkinson was born in Cambridge, England and is known for his marine oil paintings and for inventing dazzle camouflage for marine ships, which made it difficult for the enemy to estimate a target’s range, speed, and heading. The majority of Wilkinson’s self-taught art training was acquired during his service in the marines during both Great Wars. His work is housed in the Royal Academy, the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, the Walker Art Gallery- Liverpool, the Royal Society of Artists- Birmingham, the Beaux Arts Gallery, the Imperial War Museum, the Ulster Museum, the National Maritime Museum, and the Scottish National Gallery.
