Item Details

William P. Teal (Ohio; 1873 – 1940)
Perry House – Newburyport, Massachusetts
Oil painting on canvas
Signed to lower left
Label from Closson’s Art Galleries, Cincinnati to the verso

An oil painting on canvas by well-listed American artist William P. Teal (Ohio; 1873 – 1940) titled Perry House – Newburyport, Massachusetts, completed during the early 20th century. This Post-Impressionist work depicts the stately 19th-century Federal style mansion that still stands at 47 High St., Newburyport, MA. Construction on this home, now known as the historic Pierce-Perry-Farmer House, was completed in 1811. Captain Benjamin Pierce, a successful merchant mariner, had modeled his home after the Moulton House on the same street. Teal had captured the house and grounds bathed in dappled sunlight, an aesthetically pleasing image that Newburyport residents can enjoy to this day. Artist signature is signed to the lower left and marked again to the stretcher bars. This painting is mounted in a beveled wood frame with a gold tone finish. A label from Closson’s Art Galleries is attached to the verso.

Teal studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy under an impressive laundry list of formidable artists, including Frank Duveneck, Lewis Henry Meakin, Vincent Nowottny, and Charles Kaelin. He was a member of the Duveneck Society of Painters and Sculptors, the Rockport Art Association, and the Cincinnati Art Club.
