Born in Argentina, Leonor Fini moved to Italy at an early age and spent her formative years in and around Trieste where she completed her formal study of anatomy and frequented the bohemian artistic circles that thrived in the cosmopolitan atmosphere of that major coastal city . By 1931, she had moved to France and was established as an artist in Paris where she became an intimate of Max Ernst, Giorgio de Chirico and other founding members of the Surrealist movement. By the mid 1930’s, Fini had become its most prominent and influential female member and subsequently participated in almost every major Surrealism exhibition of the twentieth century. She first exhibited in America with Max Ernst (1936), and also participated in the Dada and Surrealism Exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Over the course of a long career, Fini was prolific in many mediums including painting, lithography and etching. She also illustrated numerous books and designed both theater sets and costumes for the Comedie Francaise.
