A 1963 portrait oil painting on canvas by listed American artist Emerson Burkhart (1907 – 1969). This piece depicts a seated portrait of a woman, donned in a swim suit. A mountainous seascape is seen to the background. The painting is signed and dated to the lower corner and presented in a rustic wood frame.
Born on a farm near Kalida, Emerson Burkhart studied at Ohio Wesleyan University, the Art Student’s League and later took instruction from painter Charles Hawthorne (1872-1930). Eventually, he settled in Columbus, Ohio and was an early members of the Ohio Art League. Burkhart was awarded two commissions from the WPA Federal Art Project to create murals at Central High School and at the Ohio State University. Known as an American Scene painter, Burkhart mastered impressionist, post-impressionist, and realist styles in his best known works of portraits, city scenes of Columbus OH, and harbor seascapes.
