A rare Icelandic 5 Kronur 1930 coin medallion, minted to commemorate the 1000-year anniversary of the Althing, with original box. This beautiful coin was created at the request of a parliamentary committee of the Icelandic `Althing’, to commemorate the 1,000-year anniversary of that legislative body. The Icelandic `Althing’, or ‘Althingi’ is one of the oldest parliamentary institutions in the world; founded in the year 930 A.D. at Thingvellir, Iceland; perhaps the earliest forerunner of the modern Western democratic republic style of governance. To the obverse is a fine relief of a lawspeaker at the Althing; with artwork by Baldvin Björnsson (1879-1945). To the reverse is a relief of two intertwined dragons; artwork by Gudmundur Einarsson (1895-1963). Total mintage: 10.101.
Edge is smooth, with denomination of 5 kronur engraved. Material: Silver 0.925 (Sterling).
