A mid 20th-century oil painting on canvas board by listed American artist Paul Ashbrook (1867 – 1949). Portrayed in an impressionist manner, this work features two figures walking down a street surrounded by pueblo architecture. Signed to the lower right, the work is presented in a gold-tone gesso and wood frame with a canvas liner. An inscribed label to the verso provides information about the artist and indicates that the painting was cleaned.
As a painter, etcher, and illustrator, Paul Ashbrook was a leading Cincinnati artist. He was a student of William Merritt Chase at the Art Students League in New York, and later started his career as an illustrator for Charles Klackner. After moving to Cincinnati in 1900, he studied under Frank Duveneck at the Cincinnati Art Academy, where he later taught. Ashbrook also worked as a designer, creating posters for Barnum and Bailey Circus when employed by the Strobridge Lithographic Company. Beginning in 1926, he made regular trips to Europe and Mexico, creating paintings and etchings of local scenes.
