An oil painting on canvas by Ohio-based artist Clarence Klatt (20th century), created in 1935. Featuring a view of houses, this work is portrayed in a Post-Impressionist manner with large loose brushstrokes and suppressed details. Signed and dated ‘C Klatt 35’ to the lower left, it is presented in a brown wood frame. An additional painting is present to the canvas verso.

Based in New Carlisle, Clarence Klatt was a third generation of blacksmiths in his family and he continued to run the family business after his father’s death,. However, in addition to blacksmithing, he enjoyed painting and became particularly celebrated for his colorful paintings of landscapes and fairs. Klatt studied at the Dayton Art Institute on a scholarship, and exhibited his work along Route 69, the Clark County Fair, and other local venues.

Condition

- small stains and spots of accretion scattered throughout painting; some rubbing and color fading along painting edges; some wear in frame includes stains, scratches, and finish loss scattered throughout.
