Item Details
A hand-knotted Persian Hebrew prayer mat, circa the 1950s. This wool pile rug is rendered in tones of navy, medium blue, oxblood, khaki-gold, pastel green, pink, and ivory. The field features traditional Judaica iconography including a prominent seven-branch menorah, Israeli flags, tree of life motifs, and inscription in Hebrew reading ‘ישראל’, which translates to ‘Israel’. Framing the field is a primary border of arabesqued vines interspersed with boteh and Star of David motifs over oxblood. The rug is finished with overcast selvedges, a brief kilim skirt, and wool warp fringe. A label to the reverse reads ‘Made in Iran’.
