Sears Gallagher was born in South Boston, Massachusetts on April 30, 1869. Gallagher is best known for his work as an illustrator, as well as print making and painting throughout his lifetime. Sears Gallagher received his formal art education in 1888 from English painter Samuel Peter Bolt Triscott (1846–1925). His later studies occurred at the Academie Julian in Paris, France from 1895 to 1896. Despite travel throughout Europe, most of Gallagher’s works depicted Monhegan Island and the White Mountains of New Hampshire. He travelled to Monhegan Island for over forty years and eventually bought a home there. Gallagher’s work has been on exhibition and is housed in institutions from around the world, including the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Library of Congress.
