An early 20th century landscape oil painting on canvas by well-listed American Impressionist landscape painter George Herbert Baker (Indiana, 1878 – 1943), titled Old Canal Aqueduct. The painting depicts an old wood canal aqueduct among a snowy landscape scene at dusk with stark winter trees. The painting is signed to the lower left and housed in a brushed gold and rust tone frame with a wire hanger to the verso.
Born in Muncie, Indiana, George Herbert Baker studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy and was known for his impressionist landscapes. He was a prominent member of the “Richmond Group” of painters, among other celebrated Midwestern artists such as Albert Clinton Conner, Lawrence McConaha, and Micajah Thomas Nordyke. Baker’s work has been exhibited at the Richmond Art Museum, the Haan Mansion Museum of Indiana Art, and the Indianapolis Museum of Art, among other institutions.
