A vintage handwoven Mexican Zapotec accent rug by Master Weaver Wence Martinez. This Folk Art rug is constructed with hand spun wool and was woven on a foot loom in Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca. It is rendered in a palette of crimson, cranberry, midnight blue, black-brown, and ivory, using natural, and possibly synthetic, dyes. The field features an infinity pattern of serrated diamond medallions, the four points of the diamond said to represent the four elements of earth, air, water, and fire. The rug is finished with a solid brown-black guard border, hand overcast selvedges, and wool warp fringe. A handwritten label to the reverse provides information on the artisan, provenance, and date.
Included is the seller’s note: ‘Master Weaver Wence Martinez combines his Zapotec heritage with nearly fifty years of weaving experience to create contemporary tapestries from hand spun, hand dyed Churro wool. Rug is in excellent shape, professionally cleaned and stored. Martinez Studio is a working studio and gallery in Door County, Wisconsin, that represents thirty years of collaboration between artists Sandra and Wence Martinez. Named 2018 United States Artists Fellows, their award winning paintings and weavings reside in permanent collections of several major museums.’
