Lady on Red with Floating Vase
Paper
Lower right corner by the artist’s hand
A signed, limited edition serigraph titled Lady on Red with Floating Vase by well-listed and renowned German-American Pop artist Peter Max (born 1937). This print features a woman in a blue dress, standing in a red interior, rendered in Max’s signature style of loose, expressionistic marks and vibrant color. This piece is signed to the lower right and is numbered 224 out of an edition of 300 to the lower left. It is housed behind glass, in a glossy black coated wood frame and is ready to hang with a wire.
Max received his formal art education in the 1950s at the Art Students League of New York in Manhattan, where he studied anatomy, figure drawing, and composition under the tutelage of Frank J. Reilly. Max began his career in illustration and graphic arts by creating collage-based works using elements taken from antique photographs. His interest in astronomy led to his self-described “Cosmic ’60s” period, where his art became a symbol of the counterculture with its flamboyant use of bright rainbow colors and psychedelic images.
