A watercolor painting on paper by well-listed American artist Paul Sawyier (Kentucky/New York/Ohio; 1865 – 1917). This painting features a cropped view of a large, slightly forlorn, wooden cabin with a large covered porch to the rear. The scene appears almost desolate, except the for signs of life in the drying laundry on the porch, and the young trees dotting the yard. This work is signed to the lower right. It is presented behind a brown mat with a black liner, under glass, in a gold tone wood frame.

Growing up in Frankfort, Kentucky, Paul Sawyier began his artistic training with a private tutor at a young age. He went on to have many notable instructors throughout his career, including Thomas Noble, Merritt Chase and Frank Duveneck. Returning to Frankfort after a time in New York, Sawyier made a living painting portraits and the local scenery. He first encountered Impressionism at the 1893 World’s Fair, and became one of the movement’s first proponents in Kentucky. Paul Sawyier’s works are represented in the collections of numerous prestigious institutions including the University of Kentucky Art Museum, the Mason County Museum, the Morris Museum of Art, and The Johnson Collection, among many others.
