Item Details

Antonia Sirena (American; 1929 – 2006)
Untitled, late 20th century
Oil on board
Signed “Sirena” to lower center

A late 20th-century oil painting on board by listed American artist and opera singer Antonia Sirena (1929 – 2006). This abstract work features an abyss of rough textural impasto in various colors, irregularly applied throughout the surface. It is presented in a gold-tone gesso and wood frame with a canvas liner.

Although Antonia Sirena was born in New York, she spent much of her young adulthood in Italy. She made a name for herself as a talented opera singer, but quickly discovered another creative through painting. Sirena was mostly self-taught as an artist and described her artwork as ‘Trans-Expressionism,’ combining her musical sensibilities with the art of painting. With the help of Picasso’s advocacy of her work, her first major exhibition was held at Rome’s Galleria D’Urso. Notable collectors and advocates of her work include Giorgio de Chirico, Frederico Fellini, Marcello Mastroianni, Rossano Brazzi, Gina Lollobrigida, Luciano Pavarotti, Vittorio de Sica, Pope Paul VI, the President of Italy, and other members of the Italian government.
