An oil painting on canvas by Gustav Wolff (Germany/Missouri/New York, 1863 – 1935). The painting depicts a Tonalist view of a figure approaching a tall windmill in winter. The painting is completed in thoughtful, muted sepia tones. It is signed to the lower right and is presented in a wooden frame with cast surface embellishments, gold tone finish, and a hanging wire.
Wolff’s family immigrated to the United States 1866 from Berlin, Germany, settling in St. Louis where Gustave studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts under prominent artists including Paul Cornoyer, F. Humphrey Woolrych, and Frederick Oakes Sylvester. Wolff was one of St. Louis’ best-known artist in the early 1900s, and became particularly well-known for his Tonalist landscape paintings.

- light craquelure to painting’s surface. Small specks of inpainting across sky portion of painting.
