An acrylic and Lexan sculpture titled Nereid II by listed American artist Marjorie Minkin (b. 1941), dated 1991. This abstract sculpture features an undulating and iridescent body comprised of overlapping layers of acrylic pigments and Lexan, projecting an ethereal aquatic surface. This work was possibly created as an allusion to the waters of the Aegean Sea which is associated to the Nereids, nymphs from Greek mythology who symbolized the beauty and kindness of the sea. To the verso, artist’s signature, date, and title are inscribed.
Marjorie received her B.A. in Philosophy and Minor in Studio Art from Skidmore College in New York. She also has received an M.A. in Philosophy from Boston University, an Ed. M. in Counseling at Boston University. Returning to her love of painting, she attended the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts receiving her diploma & Fifth Year Certificate. In 1982 Minkin attended the inaugural workshop of the Triangle Arts Association founded by sculptor Sir Anthony Caro, and has served on the Triangle advisory board for many years. Member of the New New Painters, a group of artists brought together by the first curator of modern and contemporary art at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Dr. Kenworth Moffett in 1978.
