John Rubens Smith was born in London in 1775, where he first studied art with his father, John Raphael Smith, a mezzotint engraver and later studied art at the Royal Academy. He emigrated to New York City in the early 19th century and influenced a generation of American artists through his drawing academies and drawing manuals. He died in New York City in 1849.
