An oil painting on canvas titled Autumn Beeches by well-listed artist William McKendree Snyder (American, 1848-1930). The painting, typical of Snyder’s oeuvre, features a dense forest of beech trees in the fall. The center of the painting is dominated by a fallen tree with a stump and branches to the center. The work is signed to the lower right and contains a title plaque to the lower edge of frame. It is displayed in a wooden frame with decorative gilt gesso moulding.
William McKendree Snyder was an Indiana native who settled in Madison, Indiana. He studied under John Insco Williams, Cincinnati 1869; W.M. Hunt, Boston; A. Bierstadt, George Inness, and A.H. Wyant in NYC in 1872-75. He painted over 700 landscapes of southern Indiana, northern Kentucky and southern Ohio, mostly of forests. His work is widely collected and held in private collections.
