An etching with aquatint on paper by listed artist Robert Whitmore (Ohio; 1890-1979), dated early 20th century. The piece depicts a nocturnal landscape comprised of a luminous stream surrounded by lush foliage. An artist’s estate stamp is present to the verso. The work is unsigned and presented unframed.

Robert H. Whitmore was a painter, printmaker and draughtsman born in Dayton, Ohio on February 22, 1890. Whitmore studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Cincinnati Art Academy, deriving his impressionistic style from the artistic movement of the time. Whitmore preferred to work directly from nature, believing that it produced an honest interpretation of the world around us. In the 1920s, Whitmore began teaching at the Dayton Art Institute before settling into a position at Antioch College for thirty years.
